Edward Martindale Richardson (1810-1874)
Mentone, France
Medium: Watercolour
Size without frame: 8.0" x 20.0"
SOLD
Originally belonging to Monaco, Mentone was purchased by France in the 1860's. 'Discovered' by the English aristocracy and the Russian proletariats, it became the height of mid 19th. century fashion and in this delightful social observation we see the beginnings of the habit of bathing in the sea. The picture is full of little details and is in the original gilt watercolour swept frame. We feel the artist must have really enjoyed painting this charming scene!
