One of an excellent pair of paintings by Duncan Fraser Mclea. This one looking towards South Shields from the Mouth of the Tyne.
McLea went to sea in his youth before deciding to take up painting as a career and settled in South Shields. Well known for paintings of local shipping and coastal scenes, both these pictures fit into that category exactly. Sadly his work became rather poor much later in life because of failing eyesight. This pair were painted in 1874, shortly before he started exhibiting on Tyneside.
