Carl Haag was a prolific and important painter of Holy Land and Eastern scenes. He gained a considerable reputation for his firmly drawn and meticulously elaborated paintings of many Eastern subjects, of which this is one and entitled 'The Pyramids of Geezeh, at the time of the inundation of the Nile'. Acquired from a private collection, this watercolour also has the provenance of the Mathaf Gallery which has a worldwide reputation for the sale of Arabic paintings, and is now situated in Knightsbridge.
