Beatrice Parsons is one of our favourite artists and this a rare work of hers featuring people. And a very lovely scene it is too: the girls in hats and pinafores carrying baskets, presumably off to market. Quite possibly the girl's first time without adult company with the mother looking a little anxious and perhaps is why Parsons has dated the painting so precisely. As you'd expect, Parsons hasn't completely ignored the flora with the rural red brick country house's gable end clad in ivy, the leaves on the trees just turning, and garden flowers just visible. Quintessential rural England of the time. Signed and dated 18th October, 1900, lower right.
