Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840)
Alexander Nasmyth was a Scottish landscape and portrait painter. A pupil/assistant to Allan Ramsay in London, Nasmyth then spent several years in Italy before returning to Edinburgh where he increasingly focussed on landscapes. In style he "blended classical elements stemming from Claude with naturalistic observation" and became the founder of the Scottish landscape tradition. Alexander Nasmyth influenced many younger painters and established a drawing school. Widely represented in public collections with >60 works in the National Galleries of Scotland, including portraits of his friend the poet Robert Burns.
