Albert Johann Ludovici, Senior (1820-1894)
Albert Johann Ludovici was born in Zittau Germany in 1820. He moved to Paris in his twenties to study at the Atelier Drölling and married a Parisian in 1850 before settling in England. In demand in his own lifetime he was renowned for portraits, including of the nobility (Edward VII), as well as for decorative paintings in interiors. He exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists, for a while their treasurer, and exhibited 25 paintings at the Royal Academy (1848-1889). Two of Albert's five children became artists: his eldest son Albert Ludovici Jnr. (1852-1932), and his second daughter Marguerite Cathelin-Ludovici (1856-1947).
