A fine oil portrait by Hardy of a black horse, its tail docked, accompanied by two attentive English Cocker Spaniels on moorland with a lake in the distance. Heywood Hardy was often commmisioned to paint animal portraits and it is probable this horse and the hunting dogs the favourites of their owner. Signed and dated, 1871, lower right.
