Oswald Garside (1879-1942)

Oswald Garside was born in Southport in 1869, the son of a manufacturing chemist. He studied at the Warrington School of Art between 1892 and 1894, then three years at the Academie Julian in Paris (under a Lancashire County Scholarship) before 18 months in Italy.  Watercolour painter born Southport, Lancs. Studied Paris and in Italy.


From 1900 Garside concentrated on painting watercolours. He had a studio in London and painted widely across Britain but particularily in Lancashire. Garside exhibited at the Royal Academy (37 works) and was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1916, the Royal Cambrian Academy 1924, and the Royal British Institute in 1925.
