Johan Mari Henri Ten Kate (1831-1910)

Johan Mari Henri Ten Kate was born in The Hague in 1831. Taught by his brother, genre painter Herman Frederik, he then studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Working in both oil and watercolor Ten Kate painted mostly genre scenes with children in a romanticized style and, as was the accepted norm, deliberately avoided any unpleasantness of reality. He also painted landscapes, coastal and hunting scenes.

Ten Kate was a member of the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam and, friends with King William III, was appointed commander in the Order of the Oak Crown. His works are among others in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Teylers Museum, the Zuiderzee Museum and the NSW Art Gallery.
