John Warkup Swift (1815-1869)
John Warkup Swift was born in Hull, but settled in Newcastle after some years at sea. A self-taught artist John Warkup Swift concentrated on marine views of ships and harbours, usually in oils, working from his Newcastle studio for about fifteen years before his early death. A talented painter whose marines are technically accurate his works can be seen at the Laing, Shipley, Ferens and Mercer art galleries.
