Albert Ludovici, Junior (1852-1932)

Following the profession of his father, Albert Senior, Albert Ludovici Jr. spent his life between Paris and London painting scenes of society at leisure. His genre paintings were the most popular, particularly his studies of the interaction of couples, whether in public places or of private moments in their homes and lives - these paintings have universal appeal. But Ludovici also painted landscapes and interior scenes in both watercolour and gouache as well as in oils. His works are reflective of James Whistler, a fellow Society member whom Ludovici counted as a close friend and corresponded with about art and life. Ludovici joined the Society of British Artists in 1881. We are very grateful for these very helpful comments from a customer, and I quote from an email: "He was actually born in London, and his father, Albert Snr. also an artist, was born in Leipzig, Saxony and moved to Paris as a young student and then moved to London, where he lived in Hampstead all his life, he died while staying in Vevey, Switzerland. Albert Jnr died in London, having lived for the most part in Highgate. Both Alberts married Parisians, which makes it confusing, and all the children were educated in England, France and Germany. He once said: "My childhood was spent more in my father’s studio in London than in the nursery.  Washing paintbrushes and polishing the palette were occupations familiar to me from an early age…Drawing and painting were my occupations long before I learnt to write."
